Printed seed paper

Seed paper (also known as growing paper or plantable paper) is a sustainable and memorable way to share your message. Unlike traditional print that is quickly discarded, plantable seed paper is kept, planted and transformed into flowers or herbs. That makes it ideal for brands looking to stand out with eco-friendly marketing.

Why choose seed paper instead of traditional print?

Traditional mailings and flyers often end up in the bin within seconds. Seed paper offers a completely different experience. Because the paper can be planted after use, people tend to keep it longer and interact with it multiple times. This higher attention value helps your brand message stay top of mind. Plantable paper combines sustainability, creativity and visibility in one product. It helps businesses create a memorable brand experience, encourages interaction and demonstrates a genuine commitment to sustainability. Instead of producing waste, your printed material gets a second life in the form of flowers or herbs. For businesses looking to make their direct mail campaigns more effective, seed paper is a smart and environmentally conscious alternative to regular paper.

At Greengiving, our printed seed paper is available in various sizes, shapes and thicknesses. From flyers and postcards to business cards, calendars and bags: the possibilities are endless. Every item can be fully customised with your logo, artwork or campaign message.

Plantable seed paper

The clue is in the name: seed paper contains seeds that grow after planting. The paper is made from two thin layers with seeds in between or, in the case of handmade paper, seeds embedded directly into the pulp. Once the paper has served its purpose, it can simply be planted in soil. With water, light and a little patience, beautiful flowers or herbs will start to grow. The plantable paper can be printed with your logo, text or customised design. Unprinted seed paper is also available from quantities of 25 sheets upwards. At Greengiving, you can order:

Whether you choose a classic postcard or a creative die-cut design, seed paper instantly gives your communication a more original and sustainable appearance.

Growing paper sizes and custom shapes

Growing paper is available in standard formats including A3, A4, A5, A6, A7 and DIN-long. Looking for something more unique? We can also produce seed paper in customised shapes to match your branding or campaign concept. Custom shapes are particularly effective for promotions and events because they attract attention immediately. Combined with the plantable aspect of the paper, this creates a marketing product people genuinely remember.

Seed paper 120 gsm vs 200 gsm

Plantable paper is available in two different paper weights: 120 gsm and 200 gsm. Both options are suitable for full-colour printing, but each type has its own characteristics. The 120 gsm seed paper is lightweight and smooth, making it ideal for flyers, inserts and larger mailings. This version consists of two thin paper layers with seeds in between and can be printed on both sides. The 200 gsm paper is sturdier and has a more premium, handmade appearance. The seeds are embedded directly into the paper pulp, giving the material a natural texture and authentic look. This type is often chosen for invitations, luxury cards and high-end promotional campaigns. Because the paper is handmade, slight differences in thickness and texture may occur. If you are unsure which type suits your campaign best, our team will gladly advise you.

High-quality seed paper printing

A common question is whether seed paper can still deliver professional print quality. The answer is yes. All seed paper products can be printed in full colour with your own artwork, logo or campaign design. We use printing techniques specifically suited to plantable paper, ensuring excellent print quality while preserving the seeds’ ability to germinate. This means you do not have to compromise between sustainability and appearance. Seed paper cards are especially popular as promotional products, event invitations and sustainable direct mail campaigns because they combine visual impact with a unique user experience.

Does seed paper actually grow?

Yes, absolutely. When planted and cared for correctly, the seeds inside the paper will germinate and grow into flowers or herbs. The seed paper contains summer flower seeds as standard, but for many products you can also choose alternatives such as: cress, thyme, carrot, lettuce, daisy, poppy and forget-me-not. For the best results, place the paper under a thin layer of soil, keep it moist and position it in a warm, light environment. Germination times may vary depending on the seed type and planting conditions, but with proper care the paper will successfully grow.

Sustainable and responsibly produced

Seed paper is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional printed materials. The paper is biodegradable and designed to create less waste by giving the product a second life after use. At Greengiving, sustainability is central to everything we do. If you would like more information about certifications, production methods or environmentally responsible printing options, our team will gladly advise you.

Seed paper as a creative marketing tool

Seed paper is widely used for sustainable direct mail campaigns, event invitations, trade show giveaways and corporate social responsibility campaigns. Businesses often choose plantable postcards or flyers because they create more engagement than traditional print. For example, instead of sending a standard promotional flyer that gets discarded immediately, companies can send a plantable card that recipients keep, plant and remember. This creates a stronger emotional connection with the brand and increases the likelihood that the message will leave a lasting impression.

How to use plantable seed paper

Using seed paper is simple. Place the paper in soil, cover it lightly and water regularly to keep the soil moist. With enough warmth and light, the seeds will start to germinate and grow. Different seeds have different sowing periods and growing conditions. On each product page, you will find detailed information about the available seed options and planting instructions.

Frequently asked questions

What is seed paper?

Seed paper (also: growing paper) consists of two layers of paper, with seeds in between. The paper can be put into the soil, and with proper care, the seeds will germinate after a while. Seed paper is available in many sizes and can be printed with your own design. Want to know more? Read our blog 'Everything you need to know about seed paper'.

In what format should I supply my seed paper artwork?

  • Please upload your design in one of the following file types: .AI, .EPS, .PDF, JP(E)G of PNG. Make sure that the file matches with the paper size and the sizes of the printing area.
  • Do not supply a design with full blocks of ink coverage, such as pictures and photos that cover a large part of the printing area. This can result in stripes when printing. We can print maximum 30% of the seed paper.
  • Looking for full bleed printing? This is only available with the sizes A4, A5 and A6 of the 200 gsm seed paper. For other sizes, make sure you save a blank space from at least 3 mm from the edges.

Can seed paper be printed full bleed?

Yes, this is available with the A4, A5 and A6 sized of the 200 gsm seed paper. Choose 'Full bleed printing' under Accessories.

Can I use my own design?

Yes, absolutely! The pictures on the product pages are just examples. You can create your own design and send it to us by email or upload in on the website.

Could you make a design for me?

Yes, that's no problem. Submit your preferences and our specialist will make a design for your seed paper product.

Can I upload a full design instead of just a logo?

Yes, that's no problem. At the product page you will find the sizes of the printing area. Make sure your design doesn't exceed these sizes. Consider possible folds, for example with a folded card.

Can I have a QR code printed on seed paper?

This is certainly possible, provided that the QR code in your design is large enough. We always perform a test during printing to check that the code really works.

Can I opt for an express delivery?

Yes, that's almost always an option when it comes to seed paper. Please get in touch about the options.

Can I supply multiple designs for one order?

Yes, that's possible. We charge €25,- per design.

Do you print user guidelines on the seed paper?

No, we don't print this by default. We do have some examples, see the download below.

Guidelines for seed paper

Which seed paper and seed type should I choose?

That depends on the season and what the seed paper is being used for. Check out our seed calender, and you will find everything about the paper thickness and when to plant/sow seed paper.

Can you send seed paper as a mailing?

Yes, we can take care of that. We print the seed paper according the approved printing proof, put it in envelopes and send it to individual addresses.

How is seed paper printed?

Seed paper is digitally printed with water-based ink. Would you like to know more about seed paper? Read this blog.

Can I print seed paper myself?

It is possible, but we advise against it. Most printers have a risk of getting damaged during printing. You might try it with an inkjet printer, but we cannot guarantee a perfect result.
