Hooray! 10 years of Greengiving & Tony’s Chocolonely

Written by Dorien Holwerda

Ten years of working together calls for cake! That’s why our colleagues Florus and Laura visited Tony’s Chocolonely to celebrate the anniversary. It was a great opportunity to look back on ten years of partnership and talk about the mission behind the chocolate.

From sixty chocolate bars to ten years of partnership

How exactly did our partnership begin? After ten years, we can no longer piece together every detail. It probably started with a customer who needed around sixty chocolate bars, for which we created our own custom wrappers. Today, Tony’s chocolate bars have become a firm favourite in our product range.

It’s no coincidence that our partnership has lasted this long. Both companies value long-term relationships and look beyond a single order. Even when things don’t quite go to plan, we work together to find a solution. Direct communication, personal contact and keeping our promises: that’s how we like to do business.

Jolien (B2B Account Specialist) at Tony’s also recognises the shared values behind our partnership: “I think our companies are a really good match, both in terms of the organisations themselves and our vision for sustainable products.”

Chocolate with a mission

Behind the colourful chocolate bars lies a serious mission. Did you know that the uneven pieces of a Tony’s chocolate bar represent inequality in the cocoa industry? Cocoa farmers often earn relatively little, while other parties in the supply chain receive a larger share of the proceeds.

Through five sourcing principles, including traceable cocoa, higher prices for farmers and long-term partnerships, Tony’s aims to change this. Through Tony’s Open Chain, other chocolate brands can also source cocoa according to these principles. This is how Tony’s hopes to drive change across the entire chocolate industry.

Jolien: “We’re proud that, thanks in part to partners like you, real change is happening in the industry.”

Besides the mission, we also talk about Tony’s new flavours. Jolien explains that Tony’s has a special tasting panel for this. But employees can’t just sign up: they first have to pass a taste test. Tasting chocolate sounds like a dream job, but it turns out you need some serious skills!

86,000 kilos of chocolate: what does that actually mean?

Over the past ten years, we’ve sold approximately 86,000 kilos of Tony’s chocolate. That’s a lot of chocolate bars! But what does this amount mean in terms of Tony’s mission? During our conversation with Jolien, we get an answer: “That really does contribute to cocoa farmers and their families earning a living income.”

In total, that represents around 80 farmers. And we have our customers to thank for that. So, to us, those 86,000 kilos represent more than just an impressive sales figure. They show how a corporate gift can also contribute to a bigger cause.

Here’s to the next ten years

After ten years and 86,000 kilos of chocolate, we’re still far from having had enough of Tony’s. Not just because of the delicious chocolate, but also because of the mission and the great partnership. Here’s to the next ten years!
